How to grow marshmallow from seed

The soothing throat-and-cough root is a tall, pretty perennial — easy from seed with a little cold treatment. Here's how.

Step 1

Cold-stratify

Chill seed in the fridge 2–4 weeks to boost germination, or sow outdoors in fall for a natural cold spell.

Step 2

Sow shallow

Barely cover the seed and keep it warm and moist. Germination can be slow — be patient.

Step 3

Sun & moisture

Unlike most herbs, marshmallow likes richer, moister soil and full sun. Water more than you would lavender.

Step 4

Harvest the root

Enjoy the pink flowers; dig the medicinal root in fall of the second year, once it's well established.

Beginner tip: potency starts with the seed. Generic packets are bred for looks; medicinal growing wants non-GMO seed bred for the plant's real compounds.
