Indoor herb garden for beginners

No yard? No problem. A sunny windowsill grows real medicine year-round — here is how to start.

The best medicinal herbs for a windowsill

01

Chamomile

Compact and cheerful; the flowers make your bedtime tea. Loves a bright sill.

02

Calendula

Bright, forgiving and quick to flower for salves and teas. Great starter.

03

Lavender

Needs the sunniest spot and dry-ish soil. Slow but worth it for aroma and calm.

04

Lemon Balm & Mint

Nearly unkillable indoors. Snip for calming, digestive teas any time.

The three rules: 6+ hours of light (a south window or a cheap grow light), pots with drainage holes, and water only when the top inch is dry. Overwatering kills more indoor herbs than anything.
