How to grow lavender from seed

Lavender from seed tests your patience — but it's very doable. The trick, the timing, and the sunny spot it needs.

Step 1

Cold-stratify

Chill seeds in the fridge 3–4 weeks first — lavender germinates far better after a cold period.

Step 2

Surface-sow warm

Press seed onto the soil surface (it needs light) and keep it warm, ~21°C, until sprouts appear. Be patient — weeks, not days.

Step 3

Sun & dry feet

The sunniest, driest spot you have. Lavender hates wet roots — gritty, well-drained soil is the secret.

Step 4

Go slow year one

Small the first year, then it takes off. Established lavender is drought-proof and long-lived.

Beginner tip: potency starts with the seed. Generic packets are bred for looks; medicinal growing wants non-GMO seed bred for the plant's actual compounds.
