How to grow evening primrose from seed

The skin-oil herb is an easy biennial — a leafy rosette the first year, then a tall bloom. Patient, but simple from seed.

Step 1

Surface-sow

The fine seed needs light — press onto the surface and keep moist. Sow spring or fall, indoors or direct.

Step 2

Sun & average soil

Full sun and ordinary, well-drained soil. Undemanding once it's up — a true easy grower.

Step 3

Expect a biennial

Year one is a leafy rosette; the tall stalk of evening-opening flowers comes in year two.

Step 4

Harvest the seed

Let the seed pods dry on the plant, then collect — that tiny seed is where the prized oil comes from.

Beginner tip: potency starts with the seed. Generic packets are bred for looks; medicinal growing wants non-GMO seed bred for the plant's real compounds.
