Companion planting for herbs & veg

Some plants make each other thrive; others fight. The classic pairings that mean more food and fewer pests.

The classic winning pairs

01

Tomato + Basil

Basil is said to improve tomato flavor and repels the pests that love them. The famous duo.

02

Calendula everywhere

The "trap crop" — pests flock to it instead of your vegetables, and it feeds pollinators.

03

Carrots + Chamomile

Chamomile is the "plant doctor" — a little nearby is said to help neighbors grow stronger.

04

Beans + almost anything

Beans fix nitrogen in the soil, feeding heavy feeders like corn and squash planted near them.

Combos to avoid: keep fennel away from most things (it inhibits neighbors), and don't crowd mint — plant it in a pot or it takes the whole bed. When unsure, give plants space.
